Question Oh, BUG PEOPLE!!!!!

I have a beetle that I can't identify even through research, but I'm sure there are folks here that can help me. I'm finding them all over my dusty miller. They seem to be a little bigger than 1/4" and are red and black. Now, here is where I'm having trouble finding words to explain their pattern. It's like they have a white "X" on their backs, the top and bottom triangles are red and the side ones are black. I think they are currently mating since I'm finding several of them stuck butt to butt. I don't see any differences in the couples though so I'm not sure what they are doing.

Any ideas?

Are they beetles with hard wing covers or bugs with soft wing covers? Here is a site that shows beetles (hard wing covers): Order Coleoptera - Beetles - BugGuide.Net

You will not believe what I found when I was looking for some id help for you! An entomology collectors site! Oh I am thrilled! I don't do mounted specimens any more but I still collect pictures of neat bugs. Easier to care for (mounted specimens require a lot of care and display space) and the bugs get to live and reproduce. Makes us both happy.

Dang, now I need more computer time.

They have hard covers, elongated.

I can get a pic but I still don't know how to post one!

First you have to have the photo in an online photo hosting site. I use webshots.com Then you can link to the photo or post it. If it is in an online site, post the page link.
