Default Hurricane season

I hope all of our southern Thumbies stay safe in this very active hurricane season. Gustave sounds terrible and then there is Hanna and a couple more tropical depressions comimg in after that. Let's all pray for everyone's saftey that are in thier paths.
Somehow, our blizzards seem much easier to deal with, and much less threatening.

You're right Rebecca. I hope the people in New Orleans heed the warning and obey the mandatory evacuation. It is a difficult thing to walk away from your home & everything you own, but it saves lives.

Yes, it seems it was a slow starter this year but is gearing up now with some humdingers. I wish Gustav would take a radical left turn and smash into someplace uninhabited on the central american or mexican coast...if there is such a thing as a mostly uninhabited spot on the coastlines around the gulf anymore. Better yet, he could go into a "sit and spin" mode until he wore himself out.

But I don't think that is going to happen, unfortunately. I think he's going to keep on course and keep or build strength because up here in upstate NY, as silly as it sounds to say, we are having "Central North Gulf Hurricane" weather. Which means incredibly, deliciously, almost impossibly beautiful, warm, dry, light breezy, sunny, soft and bright. Days of it with no sticky humidity or hazy skies to spoil it. Not sure why it happens that way, but it usually does. When the north coast of the Gulf is about to get clobbered badly, we get weather that is the best we ever get here.

We are getting rain and wind from the most outer most rain bands of Gustav right now. We went to feed the ducks and swans at the lake in front of the Public Library today and the wind was gusting about 25-30 mph. Most of the swans, geese and wood storks were all grounded. Few would fly from one spot to another when the wind dropped. We did see a swan that appeared to have a broken leg.

Gustav has moved away from our area so that we are not getting the rain and wind any more. So far the news says it has weakened into a Cat 2 storm and will hit land sometime today.Better a Cat 2 than a Cat 5 in any case. But television showed that water was washing over the levees in New Orleans and water was getting into the Ninth Ward neighborhood.
