Default Holly Bushes

I see several large round holly bushes at a restaurant we frequent often. I have decided to shop around for a few to plant in front of our house this month--any suggestions as to what is good for zone 5?

Hi Lucy! Since I've never grown any Holly bushes, I couldn't make any recommendations. I think the best place to look would be a nursery near you. See what you like there, and then continue to look around for a price you're willing to pay. I agree that Holly bushes will make ideal foundation plantations. Good Luck!!

When we used to live in zone 6, for round, bush-like hollies we grew China Girls & one China Boy. They were suggested by a friend in the horticultural biz. You need the boy for pollination if you want berries. He's not as attractive as the girls & won't bear the berries, so place him in a less prominent spot. Hollies like water, extra iron & pruning, so keep that in mind. However, they look great through the winter, especially at Christmas time.

I'm in zone 5 and this past summer, planted 11 Holly bushes. The ones that grow here very well are the Blue Prince & Blue Princess. Please keep in mind that you will need one male plant to every 10 females. Plant in full sun or partial shade. They will draw in many wintering birds with the berries that they can feast on. Great for creating a hedge. Hope that helps ya.
