Default Finally! a red tomato!!

OK, it might not sound like such a big deal to those of you in warmer zones....but I've been waiting for this since I started my seeds indoors last March.
This is called a "Mortgage Lifter" tomato and there are some really BIG green ones still out there.
(Hey Dee....I'm thinking of rye bread, american cheese & basil!)

Hi Pat,

I was late getting my plants out so mine are just now producing. My favorite is my giant Brandywines which are the best tasting tomatoes that Ive ever had.

I'm right with you Krandy -- I was late getting my plants out & Brandywines are my all time favorite. Those big Brandywines seem to take longer to mature anyway. While I wait for my BW's, I've been eating grape tomatoes -- love those as a snack or in salads. I bought a hybrid tomato plant this year too that was developed locally by a nursery I visit. I must say it is doing nicely, can't wait to taste it.

Pat, love the name 'Mortgage Lifter'! Ha! What a great name in these tough economic times. Your beauty looks like she was worth the wait. How'd she taste?

I had a couple Thursday, from the plant Mom got at the garden show in January and she gave to me in February! They had tough skins and a high acid afterbite but they were tomatoes! Bright red and tasty tomatoes! Yum, yum. I think there are a couple more on that plant. The others aren't ready yet. Bummer.

Default M-m-m-m-m Good!

Nothing like home-grown tomatoes! That first one went into a freshly-tossed salad, another summer favorite. I went grocery shopping today & I have 2 lbs of bacon, fresh white bread & crisp iceberg lettuce. You can be sure we'll be enjoying many BLT's!
I've decided to hire a security guard to keep an eye on my remaining veggies. Tried my best to find a scary-looking character to do the job. Do you think this will work?

He looks pretty scary to me! And if you can relocate him around the garden every couple of days, he might even fool the critters.

We've been harvesting tomatoes for a couple weeks now. We've got Early Girls, Cupid grape tomatoes, Romas, Supersweet cherry tomatoes & Mountain Springs. Along with Red Knight & green bell peppers, yellow banana peppers, jalapenos & red spanish onions, I've been able to make a fresh batch of salsa a couple times a week. Chuck says the batch I made tonight is the best salsa he's ever had.

Tammy, isn't it strange, I always think of Michigan as being so far north, but I guess you & Chuck are in a warmer zone than me out here in New York. You two must have planted a huge garden. I have been harvesting hot & sweet peppers, cucumbers & zucchini for a couple of weeks, and blueberries every day now. I let the gourds take over this year, but I won't be growing them again, it was just for fun, & we can't eat them.
