...Excessive heat warning remains in effect until 11 PM PDT Saturday for most of inland SW WA and NW OR...
An excessive heat warning remains in effect until 11 PM PDT Saturday.
Strong high pressure combined with southerly flow aloft is bringing the hottest weather of the year so far for most of SW WA and NW OR. This heat wave is expected to continue through Saturday... before relenting a bit Sunday.
In the interior lowlands... temperatures in most locations will exceed 100 degrees both today and Satuday. Some locations may reach as high as 105 degrees on either day. The exception will be along the Interstate 5 Corridor N of Longview WA that will likely be in the mid to upper 90s both days.
In between the two very hot days... little relief is expected overnight tonight. This will especially be the case in downtown urban areas... where temperatures will not fall much below 70 degrees. Outlying rural valleys will be a bit cooler overnight... but most locations are forecast to have low temperatures in the 60s or lower 70s tonight.
An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combinations of hot afternoons and little relief at night will create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink pleny of fluids... stay in air-conditioned rooms... stay out of the sun... and check up on relatives and neighbors. *Fire Weather Warning*
*Statement as of 07:01 AM PDT 15 August 2008*
...Red flag warning now in effect until 7 PM PDT Saturday for hot dry and unstable conditions for the Cascades of NW OR and SW WA... the Willamette Valley and Clark County... and the Coast Range of W central OR...
The red flag warning is now in effect until 7 PM PDT Saturday.
High pressure aloft... combined with light offshore low level flow due to thermal low pressure developing over western OR... will bring hot and dry conditions to much of SW WA and NW OR over the next several days. Temperatures will range between 95 and 105 with relative humidities of 15 to 25 percent.
Areas of Haines 6 will be over the area today and Saturday. The proximity of the thermal trough will also enhance the instability of the air mass during the afternoon. Moderate to poor relative humidity recoveries along upper slopes and ridges will occur both tonight and Friday night.
Overall... fuels are dry... and the weather pattern is providing critical conditions that will enhance fire behavior. Conditions will begin to gradually moderate Saturday afternoon with more significant improvement Sunday and Monday.
A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now... or will shortly. Please advise the appropriate officials or fire crews in the field of htis red flag warning. *Record Report*

...Excessive heat warning remains in effect until 11 PM PDT this evening for the interior of SW WA and NW OR excluding the higher Cascasdes and the coast...
An excessive heat warning remains in effect until 11 PM PDT this evening.
Strong high pressure combined with southerly flow aloft continues to bring the hottest weather of the year thus far. After reaching over 100 degrees at several locations Thursday and Friday... temperatures will once again rise to the upper 90s to near 100 degrees today... then begin relenting a bit on Sunday.
In the interior lowlands... temperatures today will likely be very similar to Friday’s readings in the northern and central valleys and a couple of degrees cooler in the southern valleys. Over the Coast Range... while temperatures along the W slopes are influenced by the coastal marine air... the E slopes of the Coast Range as wellas the Cascade foothills will again see temperatures in the 90s... with some spots approaching 100 degrees.
Nighttime temperatures will afford little relief... with minimum temperatures only in the 60s for a couple of hours just before sunrise.
An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot afternoons and a little relief at night will create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids... stay in an air-conditioned room... stay out of the sunshine... and check up on relatives and neighbours. *Fire Weather Warning*

A red flag warning remains in effect until 7 PM PDT this evening.
Strong high pressure aloft... combined with thermal low pressure at the surface... will bring hot and dry condition to much of SW WA and NW OR today. Temperatures will range between 90 in the Cascades to 100 in the Willamette Valley with relative humidity of 15 to 25 percent or less.
Areas of Haines 6 will be over the area today. The proximity of the thermal trough will also enhance the instability of the air mass during the afternoon. A few thunderstorms may even develop late this afternoon in the OR Cascades. The threat of isolated t-storms will expand N into the S WA Cascades tonight. Any t-storms that do form will likely produce very little rain. Moderate to poor relative humidity recoveries along upper slopes and ridges will also occur tonight.
Overall... fuels are dry... and the weather pattern is providing critical conditions that will enhance fire behavior. Relative humidity will begin to gradually moderate this evening through Sunday.
A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now... or will shortly. Please advise the appropriate officials or fire crews in the field of this red flag warning. *Record Report*

The National Weather Service in Portland has issued a red flag warning... which is in effect until midnight PDT tonight. This warning will include all the district... except the coastal zones.
Southerly flow aloft will keep unstable air moving across the district. Scattered t-storms will cross the region today and tonight. T-storms will produce a variety of rainfall amounts... but will produce heavier rainfall tonight.
Lightning strikes in combination with dry fuel conditions will pose a significant threat for new fire starts.
A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now... or will shortly. A combination of strong winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures will create explosive fire growth potential. *Record Report*

*Statement as of 13:40 PM PDT 17 August 2008*
...An unseasonably strong storm expected to impact SW WA and NW OR mid week...
Computer models agree on bringing an unseasonably strong storm into SW WA and NW OR by the middle of this week. This storm is actually moderately strong for winter time... and will likely produce unusually strong winds for Summer along the coast and an unseasonably high amount of rainfall.
This system will likely produce gale force winds over the coastal waters beginning late Tuesday and continuing Tuesday night. Wind gusts along the immediate coast could reach 50 mph or more. This storm also is forecast to have a very high moisture content... and will likely produce a significant amount of rainfall throughout much of SW WA and NW OR Tuesday night and Wednesday morning... and will likely make a very large Dent in the fire season in this area.
Be sure to monitor the latest forecasts through NOAA Weather Radio or your latest weather news source for the latest updates on this evolving and very unusual Summer weather system. *Record Report*

...An unseasonably strong weather system will move over SW WA and NW OR late Tuesday through Wednesday...
An unseasonably strong weather system will move over SW WA and NW OR beginning Tuesday afternoon. The system will still be affecting the area Wednesday evening.
The storm is remarkably similar to winter type systems and will produce strong winds along the coast. Wind gusts will be strongest Tuesday night. They will probably peak around 50 mph near coastal headlands... but coastal cities will see less strong winds peaking around 30 mph. Inland conditions will be quite a bit less breezy... except for highest elevations of the Cascades.
The system will also produce relatively heavy precipitaiton. especially in the Coast Range... foothills and Cascades. Rainfall totals for the storm will range from 1 to 2 inches in the coastal mountains and Cascades... with lesser amounts in the valleys. Freezing levels will remain high enough to rule out mountain snow... except at the very highest peaks.
This storm will have a fairly rapid onset and produce back country conditions that will be challenging at best... with cool temperatures... windy conditions... copious rain and even heavy snow at the very highest elevations.
Be sure to monitor the latest forecasts through NOAA Weather Radio or your latest weather news source for the latest updates on this unusual Summer weather system. Forecast:
