Greetings everyone here on wxvane! I am the snowywalrus of Gaithersburg Maryland, a suburb of Washington DC, about 20 miles north of the city.
Although I work for NOAA, I am not an NWS meteorologist. I am a cartographer, working for NOS, the National Ocean Service. I attended the Univ of Wisconsin-Madison, which turns out to be a great school for studying both disciplines. I grew up in Northern New Jersey, following the weather closely through the eyes of NYC TV weathermen like Gordon Barnes, Uncle Wethbee (Tex Antoine), Gloria Okon, Carol Reed and others. Lived in Lincoln Park from the year I was born (1950) till October 1958, when I moved with my family to Morris Plains, where I lived till February 1974, when I moved to Maryland where I have been ever since. I was out of the state of NJ from Sept 1968-July 1972 when I attended college in Madison WI at UW-Madison. I started off there in meteorology, but switched to cartography middle of my junior year when I just couldn't quite keep up with the intense math and physics that was required to take for the Meteorology major.
My favorite weather is snow, and my passion is weather observing, climate data, and such. Love most
all aspects though, though I don't get into technical forecasting issues that much, too much to
grasp for me at this point, though I can follow and understand the models a bit..
I have lived in Gaithersburg Maryland since February 1974, and maintained a weather station there since I moved into my current location on December 1, 1978. Where is everyone else located?
I do a lot of networking and belong to a lot of associated clubs,
websites, weather groups, etc. I am coordinator of the MD/DE ACON group, check out our
monthly reports at: MD/DE ACON report/data
I also post my daily wx on the weatherbug blog and just started to post on West Virginia Weather Net.
I am a cocorahs observer, and post my daily obs there too - check out cocorahs
I am involved with a lot of other things, but I just have run out of time for now. I will post more, and answer questions later, right now temp is 66 deg (1:12 PM EDT) dew pt 61, humidity at 84%, precip so far today 0.32". Winds blowing light from the W (1-3 MPH) PWG today so far NW @ 12. Baro press at 29.88" and falling. Cheers from the snowywalrus of Gaithersburg
