Cool Possibly buying an old SUV.

I been thinking about getting an older and cheaper SUV, like a jeep or an explorer but cheaper. The reason for it is to designate as my official storm chase vehicle. The reason I want a cheap one is because I am sure its gonna get damaged quite a bit...

If I go through with this plan. I plan to pimp it out with my storm chasing logo, website on the vehicle, emergency lights, mobile chasing software...the entire fling or is that a good word? fling? LOL

I was wondering from you all, what are the best tires to get to give further protection from hydroplaning and how can I avoid getting hail damage (severe) and being cheap about it at the same time? LOL

And anything else to help me would be great!

Im sure I wouldnt want to go the route of either one of those vehicles. Not always best to get a "cheap" vehicle for chasing, what if it breaks down 200 miles from home? Also, with gas prices I wouldnt want something thats probably getting 18 mpg.

I mean a good running vehicle but something that can take damage like from hail and all that. The body looks are not that important to me. I plan to build little cage-like shields to put over the windows for hail and all that...

That sounds great... I think you can go for a 4x4 SUV like a Jeep or a Range Rover.. But I don't know if the setup you want would be cheaper... Well at least if you can find cheap accessories that could fit your budget, that would be good...

Good luck on finding a good one... :D

Yes and this vehicle would only be used for this activity. Because of gas prices. I'd also use it for local storm spotting as well

I guess thats the key, is this really a storm chase vehicle or storm spotting vehicle. They are two different things and many spotters seem to call themselves chasers but arent. If there is a MOD RISK in Nebraska are you going there? If not then thats fine I would get a cheap vehicle as well because really all you are doing is just local spotting. Not trying to hassle you but it seems so many nowadays like to "act" like their chasing but they are still just running out 100 miles from home and spotting.

This just happened to me last month. I was going to head up to Rapid City the day before their big blizzard, I took my Jeep in for an inspection, was given the green light, broke down 10 miles outside of Rapid, 3 hours from home. The engine blew. That was one long tow ride back home and one painful $1700 bill. :(

Thats why I call myself a local chaser. At this time with my working conditions, I am unable to go long distances and chase or I would. So I just chase local weather events within my area

But I am a spotter as well. I always lean on my spot and save lives side but when the storm goes out of my county, so do I and become a chaser at that moment
