So in all your opinions, would you rather hide under an overpass or in a ditch during a tornado if that would be your only option?

Ditch, it's safer. You could easily get sucked from an overpass. It's safer to be in a ditch although sometimes harder to find.

People can say what they want, but when it comes down to it I'm getting under the over pass. I feel the push to inform the public on the danger of an overpass the last few years is nothing more then a ploy to make the roads safer, which is wise, of course its not safe to have the highways jammed up with people getting under an overpass, but when it comes to my personal safety put a ditch and an overpass in front of me with a wedge tornado bearing down on me I'm crawling up underneath that overpass.

LOL, your damn straight! I am glad to see other people on here say ditch as that leads to me believe that at least people do know that it will be dangerous to take shelter under an underpass but if its me and those are the only two options Im not laying down in a ditch. I always picture the car you just left getting rolled over right on top of you, lol.

I would also get under an overpass. I'd rather take the risk of getting sucked up than being open to get hit in the face by every debris you could think of...

Perhaps you might want to read all of the accounts of those who took shelter under overpasses during big tornado events and forget that video from April 1991. Overpasses are fine for taking shleter from large hail but not tornadoes. An UNDERPASS where the road drops down below general ground level would be better since that places you in a low area assuming of course that it doesn't rapidly fill up with water like some around Tucson are prone to do.

Personally, when in a vehicle and a tornado at you why not drive away, and fast! I have 4 wheel drive, so I'm taking the damn field or anything before stopping in its' path... That is of course if you have the knowledge to recognize where the tornado is and where it is going, along with what it is going to do.

As a chaser and a spotter, id try running away in my vehicle but if for some reason I could not, I would not want to go anywhere where my face and body and head is open to be smacked with any kind of debris.

Unless you're tucked way up under the beams you are just as likely to pelted with debris under an overpass as anywhere else. Not to mention the possibility of being sucked out along with the cars like what happened in Wichita Falls in 1979.
