FRICTION.

Wind+Land= Friction. Friction on one side of a circular object causes it to get "sucked" toward the friction. Its simple physics.

Originally Noel was supposed to parallel the S coast of Haiti and cuba. Instead, it went straight north over Haiti because of friction. When it got off the center reformed where there was less friction, to the west of where it originally was. It Moved WNW until it got hear cuba, then W, inland into cuba because of friction.

See a pattern? Here's another example. In 2002 when Joe Bastardi's video blog was still free was when I learned about this. Isidore was predicted to move slowly through the Yucatan Channel and head toward the gulf coast. Instead, it curved to the west and eventually South into the yucatan. Joe Bastardi predicted this when no one else did.

It was of course, caused by friction.

I noticed. The friction theory definitely has merit, IMO. It has occurred too many times for it to be discounted (Noel 2007, Ernesto 2006, Dennis 2005, Charley 2004, Isidore 2002, Iris 2001, Mitch 1998, among many more).

But there are also instances where land seems to almost repel storms (Humberto 2007, Ivan 2004, among others). So the question is, when does repelling occur and when does attraction occur?

Yea, and repelling happens a lot too... Dean and Ivan both somewhat 'bounced' off Jamaica (Ivan moreso).

I know when you study waves, you find that the wave (water, sound, light, etc) will bend towards the side where it is moving slower, but I have no idea if this type of situation can apply to something completely different like a hurricane encountering land.
