On Satellite. I see this confusion made a lot of times, so I was wondering if there is a sure fire way to tell the difference.

I can't guarantee this works 100% of the time, but ULLs temd to be dominant features in enhanced water vapor imagery, while LLCs tend to be more dominant in visible imagery, and more impressive on enhanced infared imagery.

Another clue is to look at cloud texture & opacity on a visible image...ULLs tend to have a semi-transparent presentation, with a very "flat" texture. LLCs tend to have some areas of very thick clouds, and a much "deeper" texture to the convective clouds.

Then, of course, you can have an ULL and a LLC co-located, in which case it can be difficult to tell who is who (or is it whom?).

You can always "cheat" and look at the analysis & forecast products!

That. And LLC's (if they have convection) generally have it exploding from the center, whereas ULL's generally have convection swirling around the outside with nothing in the center

Take Andrea as an example. When it was an ULL there was no convection in the center:

But AFTER the final advisory was issued it transitioned to a Tropical Depression and was not renamed, which still bothers me:
