INDUSTRIAL CANAL LEEVE WAVES SPILL INTO THE 9TH WARD OF NEW ORLEANS
NEW ORLEANS -- Waves overtopped New Orleans' industrial canal Monday in the Upper 9th Ward, after Hurricane Gustav stormed ashore south of the city. The Lower 9th Ward was destroyed by flooding three years ago when a levee along the same canal broke during Hurricane Katrina.
Wind-driven water poured or sloshed over the top of the Industrial Canal's floodwall, and flooding was reported in about half of the streets closest to the canal, with knee-deep water reported in some places.
The Category 2 hurricane came ashore around 10 a.m. Monday near Cocodrie, La., according to the National Hurricane Center. When it came, it brought 110 mph winds and flooding to most of Louisiana.
