Here are the 2 areas experiencing these quakes. It's almost a rocking action.

What we are seeing now is the aftershock sequence of the two earlier major shocks. Remember that after the monster earthquake in 2004, it was warned that such occurrences would happen for some time since although the thrust faulting in 2004 encompassed 1000 km of the subduction zone fault, the remainder has to adjust to the new strain patterns set up after the big event. This also includes the lesser inland faults as well so Indonesia is going to be very shaky for some time.

I stated on another site that this area would see this for at least a decade. It will be interesting to see if there will be any large quakes on the easter side of the Ring of Fire. Many do not subscribe to the theory, but it will be worth watching.

An earthquake geologist I was listening to today spoke of how these quakes have been circling a critical area that slipped with a major quake in the late 18th century. The pressures are actually building up there and not releasing from the '04 quake and tsunami. This could trigger a repeat of the '04 scenario with great loss of life and property, The fact that they have occurred so close together concerns him because it puts alot of stress on that area all at once.
They are watching it closely.

I think that's the portion of the fault system that did not slip in 2004 and which they have expressed concern over several times since the '04 shock. A biggee there would certainly be part of the readjustment of the whole system.
