If we're getting up near 100°C...we've really got some problems.

The earliest 100 degrees ever recorded at RDU since record keeping began in 1944.

Previous 100 at RDU was recorded on June 8th, 1999.

An in depth-analysis by Mike Defino
Finally some relief is on the way to this heat wave. Unfortunately this relief will come in strong to severe thunderstorms in a very moist BL...

The set up

This set up will not be favorable for a major severe weather outbreak for the major cities from NYC southward. Main reason is the mid level trough, which is currently over the central plains, will push eastward and take a neg. tilt with strongest winds on the east side of the trough causing it to lift northward. As it does so it will carry those stronger winds aloft and place them post frontal and over New England. However, current guidance shows strong frontogetic forcing taking place along the front with strong low level and sfc convergence which will aid in the development of the thunderstorms tuesday afternoon. continue reading

Martinsville has had highs of 99, 99, and 100 the last three days. I'm predicting 100 again today and 97 for Tuesday before it finally cools back down.

Really steaming up here in the Mohawk Valley, upstate NY. In the nineties for three days and very humid...thank goodness for a breeze most of the three days. One night was very still, though and it was awful, like a steam bath. Sun is very hot and very easy to get burned or sunstroke, though.

We're getting our share of the record breaking heat. The temp reached 101 last Thursday & has been hovering around 99 since. Last evening the power grid was taxed so much that we lost power in our county twice. First time for an hour & the second time for half an hour. That's scary. We had to crank up the soaker hoses over the weekend as our landscape started to wilt. Some isolated thunderstorms are predicted & I hope they materialize. Try to stay cool folks!

Yesterday´s High Temperatures Map

Below is the list of high temperatures yesterday across the Mid Atlantic.
DAY THREE OF THE HEAT WAVE LIST
By: Promet Chris Sowers

Quote:
Record highs were set up and down the East Coast and we were no exception here in central Virginia. Richmond reached 100 degrees, breaking the old record of 99, set in 1984. This was the 2nd earliest 100-degree occurrence on record. Norfolk reached 101 degrees this afternoon, breaking the daily record of 98, set way back in 1899. This was the hottest temperature so early in the season at Norfolk.
